Kara discusses basic ideas from the author to be reviewed in the upcoming first episode of Season 1: Janet Lansbury, re-evaluating "What’s our job as parents?" and considering that as parents, we don't need to direct our children's attention or their feelings, we can trust where their attention goes and enable them to follow their own interests from birth. We can trust their feelings are appropriate for their situation and development.
Tony and Kara discuss fears that often lead to more stressful and controlling parenting behavior, including fearing our children's feelings, fear that our children reflect poorly on us, and the fear of being out of control. Prime Directive (or non-interference) parenting is discussed as an alternative that promotes self awareness and self-confidence in our children. When accompanied by empathy practices, this path can help our children develop and follow their own moral compass. Finally, Tony and Kara discuss that it can take a lot of work to safely let your child follow their folly without intervention. We must set up spaces where there is nothing the child can’t do, in the same way many Montessori schools do.
The authors of books to be discussed in episodes 2-4 are also discussed, including Alfie Kohn, Elaine Mazlich and Adele Faber.
